”As parents, we want to provide the best for our little angels. We wish them to be comfortable at all times, and will do whatever it takes to give them that. Sleep is a big aspect of toddlers’ lives and it can negatively affect them (and you, let’s be real) if they don’t check in healthy hours of sleep time. In fact, research shows that it can lead to forgetfulness, irritability, and stress among other issues.
To attain that sweet spot of sleep for your child will include a lot of aspects like ambience, sounds, temperatures, personality as well as comfortability. What they wear to bed will determine what they are like when they wake up the next day.
Now every toddler holds their own individuality, so they will react differently to the way you decide to clothe them. Some of them may like to be warm and bundled up while others may prefer to have their feet out like nobody’s business. The important thing to note is just to experiment and see what your toddler catches the most ZZZs with.
Depending on the temperatures outside, the season as well as the temperatures inside the house, you will want to pick the right materials to clothe your child in. If the environment is cooler, go with warmer fabrics like fleece, wool, jersey or bamboo rayon. These fabrics will absorb any moisture and keep your child nice and toasty. When the degrees are notched up, go with the quintessential fabric: cotton. Of course, some other options you have are linen, muslin and lawn. These are breathable, sweat absorbent and hypoallergenic.
You want to make sure that the fit you choose is snug but not too tight or too loose. It shouldn’t restrict the little one’s movement but also not slip on over their heads. Go with whatever fits them the best for optimum comfort.
In terms of outfit choices, the world is your oyster! You can still dress your toddler in adorable onesies and night suits. Consider clothing them in socks when it’s slightly cooler. Otherwise, anything works… t-shirts and pants, any sleeve length, shorts etc. If your toddler needs to be changed during the night, something with zips or buttons will be very convenient.
Keep in mind that your child does not overheat during the night. Make sure that they are cool to the touch and aren’t sweating. Often, we tend to dress them far too warmly. However, this can have the opposite effect of the comfort we are trying to achieve as it can make them prone to nightmares. A simple cotton shirt underneath a onesie may help your child combat the cooler temperatures with ease.
Have them wear a fleece blanket during the winters. If they tend to kick off the blanket during the night, think about using microfleece sleep sacks. They are incredibly beneficial in ensuring your child stays warm throughout the night. It doesn’t allow them to have their feet out at all!
At the end of the day, just be flexible with your child and don’t be shy from trying out different styles and patterns. After everything is said and done, your child (and your household!) will be a lot happier when they are well rested. ”
